Leadership in the Future of Work

Now we are in the 4th industrial revolution, as the emerging of new technology like Artificial Intelligence, most of the jobs have been replaced by robots. So what we are are going to do in the future, what can not be replaced for us humans?

Well, it's about the very nature of work itself , leadership. Leadership is very important. It's irreplaceable.

At "Leadership in the Future of Work Conference 2018" event held in NTU on Mar 28th, four leaders from different companies gave their speeches and inspired the students a lot.

Ms Anna, Expert and Market Leader of McKinsey Org Solutions, said that it's coach rather than command that will matter within an organization, especially in management. She also presented us some videos about LipNet, image recognition, etc. Amazing progress in AI and automation, the impact on work, it's about jobs that have potential to be automated. And she talked about the technical feasibility and pace of breakthrough, demands for skills will likely change, what we need to do is to focus on social intelligence, communication such soft skills. We need to reskill, and improve the reskilling ability, the transferable ability.

There are three key points wen can do:

  1. Clarity on future needs and gaps
  2. Rebust, holistic plan
  3. Disciplined execution
Another CEO from a multinational company stated from personal and organizational perspective that what makes a good leader. Nowadays, it's more collective, more network, you can't know anything by yourself. The new leaders in current digital age are Digital Leaders. You have to bring people together, you have to manage a network, the hamburg-hungry people, to maintain the diversity. Diversity can help company keep a balance and build innovation. There are two kinds of diversity, the first one is gender diversity, the other one is generational diversity.

Finally, he gave three suggestions to us young people:
  • Be true to yourself, you are unique
  • Think big but take small steps
  • Work like crazy
And then Mr Ang Yuit, CEO of a small business enterprise, said that for SME leaders "you have to find your followers". And SMEs in Singapore contributed 99% GDP, it's a big opportunity to manage a SME here. And your actions out of your leadership.

The last speaker, Mr Jagadish, CEO of Systems of Silicon Manufacturer Company, his topic was "Become Inspirational for the Future - Transformational Leadership". The only thing constant in life is "Change", always be prepared for the crisis, be driven by innovation and passion. Learn to manage the sources, lead the change. That's transformational leadership, lifelong learning journey.

Always being prepared, and keep learning on the way.

Here I'd like to simply conclude what I have learnt from the workshop and the article. First of all, what is Design Thinking? Design Thinking is a design methodology that provides a solution-based approach to solving problems. It is extremely useful in tackling complex problems that are ill-defined or unknown, by understanding the human needs involved, by re-framing the problem in human-centric ways, by creating many ideas in brainstorming sessions, and by adopting a hands-on approach in prototyping and testing. The five-stage Design Thinking model is proposed by  the Hasso...
